Cherished Threads:
A Photographer’s Guide to Finding Heirloom-Worthy Clothing in Winston-Salem
There’s something magical about heirloom portrait clothing — those soft, timeless pieces that feel like they’ve been gently loved through generations, yet still capture the innocence of childhood so beautifully. As a portrait photographer based in Winston-Salem, NC, I often hear the same question from families prepping for a session: “Where do I find clothing that feels classic, beautiful, and worthy of these once-in-a-lifetime photos?”
Over the years, I’ve wandered through boutiques, talked with local shop owners, and curated outfits that photograph like poetry. Here are my favorite spots where you can discover heirloom-worthy pieces — perfect for newborn, milestone, and heirloom portrait sessions.
Shop Local
Winston-Salem is lucky to have such thoughtful, locally owned boutiques where you can find pieces as special as the moments you’re about to capture. Shopping local not only supports our community — it also means your portraits will feel deeply personal and beautifully rooted in place.
If you ever need styling help or want outfit ideas before your session, I’m always happy to help — because the right clothes can turn a great portrait into a treasured heirloom. 💛
Rolly's Baby Boutique – Classic Softness and Sweet Details
This beloved Winston-Salem staple is a treasure trove for Winston-Salem parents. Rolly’s focuses on hand-picked clothing and gifts that feel personal, and they have a whole section of heirloom pieces that translate beautifully in photographs. It’s also a great place to find personalized gifts and loveys that become heirlooms in their own right. If you go, be sure to check out the upstairs area where you might spy a few of my portraits hanging on the walls along with work from other local photographers!
McCalls Reynolda Village – Boutique Quality in a Historic Setting
Tucked into Reynolda Village, McCalls blends a curated boutique vibe with quality pieces in all age ranges. I also love their home fragrance and pajama/ delicates section for moms! Don't forget to visit Dough Joes right across the street for a yummy treat or coffee!

TIPS FOR CHOOSING PORTRAIT-READY CLOTHING
Whether you’re perusing boutiques or consignment racks, here are a few photographer-approved ideas that will help your heirloom session shine:
- Stick with neutrals and soft palettes. Creams, ivories, pastels photograph best for heirloom photos. I would avoid anything too bright, as it gives a color cast to your little one's face.
- Look for texture. smocking, lace, and gentle embroidery add that vintage feel.
- Bring a few options. Sometimes the sweetest outfits are the ones you least expect.
family Traditions
Many families have their own heirloom clothing that has been passed down through the generations! This is a wonderful option as well! Just be sure it fits and is cleaned/ ironed prior to your session.
The Client Closet
I have spent years curating favorite pieces which are available for use during your heirloom portrait session. Be sure to reach out prior to your session to make sure I have a specific outfit in your child's size. You are welcome to stop by the studio to view the client closet or email me for a private link.
