Capturing fALL: mY FAVORITE LOCATIONS FOR FALL FAMILY SESSIONS

As someone who was born and raised right here in Winston-Salem, I can tell you—fall is our city’s time to shine.

The air gets crisp (but let’s be honest, still unpredictable), the leaves put on a show that rivals any mountain drive, and suddenly everyone’s craving pumpkin spice like it’s a food group. For me, fall has always been about more than just cozy sweaters and hot apple cider—it’s about capturing families at their happiest, surrounded by all that autumn color. And lucky for us, Winston-Salem is full of picture-perfect spots that turn into pure magic this time of year. Here are my top five favorite places for family sessions when the leaves start showing off.

1. Reynolda Gardens and Fields

A true gem, Reynolda Gardens brings an elegant, and timeless feel to fall sessions. Whether it's the gardens and that gorgeous white greenhouse, or the tall grassy fields, you won't find a disappointing backdrop here. The manor house and meadow is stunning, as is the little village and historic Reynolda barn. They even start decorating for the holidays in November, so if you're looking for some holiday charm, try a stroll through Reynolda Village and a few photos in front of the Barn. After your session, don't forget to stop by Dough-Joes for a pumpkin or maple glazed doughnut and apple cider or coffee. (highly recommend!)

2. Tanglewood Park

For me, Tanglewood has always been a family place—whether it was summer picnics or driving through the Festival of Lights every December. In the fall, its open fields and wooded paths practically glow at sunset. I love bringing families here because it offers so much variety: wide-open spaces for kids to run and play, as well as tucked-away spots for more intimate portraits.

3. C.G. Hill Memorial Park

C.G. Hill Memorial Park is a lesser known park, but has lots of options for your family photo session. In November, the trails and wooded areas turn into a canopy of glowing color, and the little pond adds such a peaceful touch. Families love it because it’s easy for kids to explore without being too crowded.

4. OLD SALEM HISTORIC DISTRICT

Old Salem has been part of my life since childhood field trips, and every time I walk those cobblestone streets, I’m reminded of the history woven into our city. The rustic charm of brick buildings, white picket fences, and old-world details pairs beautifully with the warmth of fall colors. It’s perfect for families who want portraits with that vintage charm.

5. The Little Chapel

The Little Chapel is one of those spots that feels like a hidden treasure in Winston-Salem. It’s so quaint and charming, almost like stepping into a storybook. In the fall, there is tall grass, and the setting feels quiet and peaceful. I love photographing here because it has such a cozy, intimate feel, and the little touches of architecture from the little stone chapel and solarium add so much character to your photos. This location fills up quickly each fall, but if you're lucky to snag a spot, you won't regret it.
